 Subject: there are many ways
to gain ability. Some of the ways take time / effort while some ways require gold. Either way, you gain as you said "little ability gain."

Dwelling - furniture
Shadow Caslte - Hell cave
Pebble Island

I may have missed a couple more ways but the easiest way as far as I can tell is the potion shop which you mentioned.
