"I'm" comes, like you said, from "I am" and "am" is auxiliary verb "be". Therefore "I am" are two words and so are "I'm". This is called contraction: A contraction is a shortened version of the written and spoken forms of a word, syllable, or word group, created by omission of internal letters. (from Wikipedia). Same goes with such contractions as -re, -n't, -s (for is, has, does, as, us) -d, -ll, o- (contraction of "of" o'clock). |
