Subject: Chapter 3. Mother and Son
“Don’t just stand there! Help Kaige and Sable out of here!” Lithia yelled as she flung two of the silver stars.
Damon broke from his trance and sprinted to the struggling girls. He grabbed the front legs of the dead horse and heaved, sliding it down just enough for Kaige to shimmy out from underneath it. “You need to get out of here! Somewhere out of these trees and-.....” Damon’s sentence was cut short as Lithia crashed into a tree near him. Sable’s eyes widened in fear as low growling approached behind the vamps and Damon flipped around seeing for the first time the most horrible beast he had ever laid eyes on.
The creature seemed to be a large bear, though misshapen with an almost feline like face. It stood nearly seven feet tall while on all four of its legs and had two horns protruding from its forehead. It stopped a few feet away from Damon and sniffed the air, looking at them all with beady eyes that dripped with malice. Then it charged forward, an earsplitting roar the only warning to the coven.
Damon held his ground, keeping himself in front of Sable and Kaige. He pulled out a silver sword, the blade engraved with the Ashe insignia, and held it out defensively, waiting for the beast to come into range. Before he had the chance to plunge his sword into the creature, though, Lithia had gotten up off of the ground and thrown herself into the exposed side of the creature, knocking it off course.
“Go! NOW!” She said as she pointed into the trees. The ‘bear’ got back to its feet and roared in rage as Lithia shimmered for a second and then became invisible. Damon realized immediately that his mother was giving them a chance to make a run for it before the beast turned its attention back to him and his coven.
“Run......quickly and silently” he hissed as he backed up slowly towards Kaige and Sable. They nodded and ran into the trees, their feet barely touching the ground. Damon surrounded himself in shadows so that he became unseen as well, keeping watch over the girls until they reached the edge of the forest. They stopped after they were free of the trees and stood, shivering in fear. Damon released the shadows and frowns, “I have to go back. She’s going to need help.” The vampiresses nod in unison and then sit beside each other on the worn grass path.
Damon ran as fast as his vampiric powers allowed him too, exerting himself fully until he came to the small clearing where he had left his mother to fight alone. He stopped right inside the trees and looked around, the beast and Lithia were no where to be found. “Oh Gods, please let her be alive....” he whispered as he flicked to infrared. He scanned the area around him for any signs of life and listened intently to make sure the creature could not sneak up on him. Across the clearing, nearly hidden by some thick brush, Damon noticed a large spot of red. He ran over and flicked back to normal vision. On the ground was Lithia, bleeding heavily from a head wound and her left arm that seemed to be broken completely in half, the bone protruding from the skin painfully.
“Lithia.....?” He moved the platinum silver hair from in front of her face and checked that she was still breathing. “Oh Gods help me....” He picked her up gingerly and looked around, knowing that he would have to stay on his guard. Damon thought back to the small Inn he saw near the path where Sable and Kaige waited and knew he would have to take his mother there to be helped.
