Subject: Achilles and the Gods
Achilles realizes the Greeks are suffering in battle and wonders if the gods are going to have sorrow on him by balancing the
since death was his fate. Achilles was the strongest in the Greek army. With Achilles in the army, the battles were even. With Achilles out, they are suffering. Because Achilles has gone through so much pain (i.e. the loss of Briseis) and has been fated to die at the hands of a Trojan, the least the gods could do is to even the players out in the war by taking out one of the Trojans’ strongest fighter – which was Hector. The gods seemed to have had all of this well planned out…the death of Patroclus led to the death of Hector by Achilles which led to Achilles’ death by a Trojan warrior. And since the Greeks have been going through an unfair advantage, it seemed as though they were given a chance to defeat Troy once and for all as it should have been long before. From this passage, it seems as though Homer is foreshadowing the fall of the Trojan army.
