There has 2 diff units.

Defensive/Ranged Unit Shadow: 3x3 squares
They help you alot when you are trying to build more units or cover lots of farms or mines.

Offensive/Combat Unit Shadow: 1x1 squares
Basically you should not train offensive units because you don't get big "shadow" from offensive units, (so it will only give you +1 from farm/mines or outpost).
