Subject: Ever hear the story | |||||
of the miser? No one knows how he came to own so much gold, but he did. It was like the meaning for his life to be around it, to hold it, to count it, to make sure it was still in his safes. He lived alone by a country road, where many people came past but none were let in. One day he got an idea. He was always paranoid of losing his gold, and he wanted to be even more secure. So he took all his bars and coins, and melted them all into one huge rock, and buried it in his yard. He would then sit on a chair above it, day after day. The morning came when he unearthed the rock to admire it again, when to his horror, it was no longer gold! Underneath where his chair had been was a hard gray stone- nothing more. He wailed in despair, wondering what sort of villain could have done this. A traveler passing by spoke his mind. "Look at this stone. You can sit on it, take it out and weigh it, and admire it all day long. You can call every bit of it yours." The miser lamented, "But it's not the same! It's not gold, and I am a ruined man." To this the traveler sighed. "Does it not fulfill your purposes? "Your boulder of gold might as well have been stone For you never used it while you called it your own!" Moral of the story: Don't let what you've got just sit around. If it's not used for anything, it's pointless. |
