Subject: How to be a Road Badass Biker 101 | |||||
| Step 1 Assuming you have ridden more than a few miles by yourself with your roadbike. Ask a shop what rides leave from what areas of your town. Step 2 Show up on time at the ride location. Introduce yourself to a few people and mention it is your first group ride. Step 3 The others will be happy to show you the ropes of their particular ride, but here are some tips -stay away from the front of the group unless you are a very strong rider -stay behind the rider in front of you but a little offset to avoid having to hit your brakes when the action slows (try to avoid brakes till it is obvious people are stopping) -if the wind is from the side you may see an "echelon" which goes through the wind like geese flying south (sort of) -if a "paceline" develops and you get swept through to the front you will want to lead for only a few seconds, then gradually move over to the falling side as opposed to the advancing side which you came from. -pacelines are an acquired art, it takes a while to get the hang of doing everything gradually. DON'T pick up the pace when you are in front significantly. This is very common and messes up the paceline, but again it takes awhile to get it right. -if someone gives you attitude just ask them for advice...then they will be your ally rather than a jerk. Step 4 That's it for this one, just ask, there are no stupid questions. No one came out of the womb in a paceline. Some roadbikers can be jerky at first, please understand that to some extent their safety depends on your ability to ride your bike. It makes things uneasy till they learn to trust you. Makes sense, but can be intimidating at first, don't worry people love to give advice! Step 5 Learn the propper biker language. It cosnists of usage of hand signs and and verbal language. When you are speeding down the hignway you cant hear a thing nor your mates so you will have to use hand signs to comunicate between each other and the other drivers (lets stop at the next gas stop i need to refuel, we go left/right, lets race, slow down, get back on your track you stupid twit, get away from me ya pinhead...). |
