| The first thing you notice about the filthy, disheveled man that the people call "bum" is the offensive smell that seems to precede his slow shuffling arrival by minutes. Indeed, you find the very notion of getting close enough to make out any of the features of his scruffy face enough to make you gag. His clothes look as though they haven't been changed in years, if not decades and the especially observant among you would notice the remains of old newspapers that he has stuffed under his clothes to help keep him warm on the long cold nights among the waste and refuse in the back alley behind the Red Lobster. If you look closely, however, you see that his eyes, a piercing, deep blue, seem to look straight through your facade, laying bare your inner-most fears and worries. Or maybe just the endless years of hard living have left him so cynical that he immediately expects the worst from anyone he meets. |
