| The problem goes back way considerably further then just the 1970s or the Regan era, but recent times have been the culmination of many, many years of political ignorance on behalf of the people. Things like rampant consumerism, treating celeberty gossip like the news, fear mongering, and mindless crap for entertainment like reality tv are all things that have facilitated this distraction from participating in democracy to our full potential but it is the people who allowed them to do so. We have allowed the definition of 'the American dream' to change from being free, content, healthy, and happy, to trying to get richer and richer at all costs, society be damned. |
